Qualifications and Experience

With over thirty years of experience as a surgical technologist and healthcare educator.  I have dedicated my career to advancing the field through leadership and teaching. I have served as the Program Director of the Surgical Technology Program at Chesapeake College since 2010, overseeing program operations, managing clinical sites, and ensuring national accreditation. I actively contribute to the profession as Treasurer of the Maryland-Delaware State Assembly of Surgical Technologists and through participation in national conferences.

I hold an Associate of Science in Health Science from Gulf Coast State College and have completed extensive training in Surgical Technology. My professional credentials include being a Certified Surgical Technologist since 2010, with ongoing membership in the Association of Surgical Technologists for over 18 years.

My professional journey includes roles such as Clinical Instructor and Surgical Technologist at various respected institutions, where I have led in both educational and clinical capacities, fostering student development and maintaining high standards of surgical practice.

Teaching and Scholarship

Throughout my work at Chesapeake College, I have prioritized enhancing the quality of our Surgical Technology program. In 2019, I successfully transitioned the program from a certificate to an associate degree, aligning with evolving industry standards and accreditation requirements. This change was instrumental in elevating the program's stature and providing students with a more robust educational foundation. By developing student outcome measures tied to national competencies, I ensured that our program maintains high standards of quality and accountability. Additionally, I integrated advanced simulation equipment and digital tools into our labs and classrooms, fostering a hands-on learning environment that prepares students for the modern operating room.

Student and Community

Supporting students both in and out of the classroom is a cornerstone of my teaching philosophy. I organize local workshops and events that allow students to engage with their communities and build professional skills. Through interdisciplinary collaboration with departments like radiology and nursing, I provide cross-disciplinary experiences that strengthen students' confidence and broaden their perspectives. By leveraging fundraising proceeds to provide enriching, hands-on educational experiences, I ensure that students who cannot travel to national events still receive valuable professional exposure. These efforts foster a strong sense of community within the program and prepare students for successful careers in surgical technology.

I have actively built and nurtured partnerships with K–12 and higher education institutions to expand career pathways for students. My collaboration with Junior Achievement in Wicomico and Talbot counties brought interactive, hands-on career exploration activities to hundreds of middle and high school students, sparking interest in healthcare careers. By hosting on-campus events for local schools, I created early pipelines for students considering surgical technology. Moreover, I developed articulation agreements with Wor-Wic College and began discussions with Cecil College, further expanding academic pathways and facilitating student success.

College Governance Contributions

While my responsibilities as the sole full-time faculty member limit my ability to attend every meeting, I am committed to participating in college governance and strategic planning initiatives. I contribute to the development and revision of official program documents, such as the student handbook and curriculum materials, ensuring they align with the college's broader mission. Additionally, I support college-wide events, recruitment activities, and high school outreach programs whenever possible, ensuring the Surgical Technology program remains visible and accessible to prospective students and community partners.

Collegiality

As an active member of the Association of Surgical Technologists, I serve as Treasurer for the Maryland-Delaware State Assembly. In this role, I organize regional workshops and professional development events, ensuring that surgical technologists across the region have access to continuing education opportunities. My participation in state and national conferences allows me to represent Chesapeake College and stay informed about the latest industry trends and standards. These experiences not only enhance my professional growth but also directly benefit our students, ensuring they receive an education that meets the highest standards of the field.
